Peanut Rx is a disease risk index that allows peanut growers in the SE to predict relative disease risk for the upcoming season based on management practices.
The peanut Rx program was created by the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Auburn University, and now includes Mississippi State University. The index is concerned with four major diseases of peanuts: tomato spotted wilt (TSWV) , leaf spot, white mold, and Rhizoctonia limb rot.
The index is based on the best understanding of factors that affect disease incidence and severity. It is designed to help growers approximate the magnitude of the risk that they face in the upcoming season. More importantly, it serves as an educational tool that allows the grower to predict the benefits of different management practices that he/she makes in hopes of producing a better crop. Some risk, such as the one for TSWV, can only be mitigated by pre-season measures, while for other can be a combination of pre-season decisions and after planting management.
Risk factors are assigned a numerical risk value based on their potential impact on disease risk. They are evaluated and updated annually based on the most current research, variety testing and control updates with cooperation from researchers and Extension specialists
The peanut Rx program also includes prescription spray schedules developed by individual manufacturers according to predicted risk index values (categories).
The app provides a convenient and easy way to use the peanut Rx index and associated spray schedules.
